Loss of a pet
"It Was Just a Pet" When Grief Feels Minimized
Your sorrow is valid because your love was real.
One of the hardest parts of losing a pet is how often the grief is dismissed. "Well, it was just a pet." "You can always get another one." "At least it wasn't a person."
These words, though often meant to comfort, can deepen the pain. They suggest that your love was replaceable, that your grief should be smaller.
But pets are not interchangeable. They are individuals with personalities, histories, and unique relationships with the people who loved them. For many, a pet is a source of emotional safety. For some, they are the most consistent presence in life. Losing them can feel like losing a confidant, a routine, or a sense of stability.
Grief does not require permission. It does not need to be compared or ranked. Your sorrow is valid because your love was real.
