Loss of a sibling

Keeping Their Presence Alive

The bond does not end, it changes form.

After a sibling dies, one of the most painful questions is how to keep them present without being consumed by loss. You may fear that moving forward means leaving them behind. That healing means forgetting. That joy betrays what they meant to you.

But love does not work that way. The bond you shared does not end, it changes form. Your sibling can remain part of your life through memory, through the values you both held, through the stories you tell and the laughter you still share with others who knew them. They shaped you in ways that continue to show up, even if you no longer notice.

Some people create rituals: a toast on their birthday, a visit to a meaningful place, a quiet moment of remembrance on ordinary days. Others carry their sibling forward through advocacy, creative work, or simply by living in a way that honors what they taught you.

There is no single right way to keep someone alive in your heart. What matters is that you give yourself permission to remember without being trapped by memory. To love without being shattered by it. To carry them forward, not as a burden, but as part of who you are becoming.

With care,
