Loss of a friend or chosen family
The Loss of Shared History
Grief about continuity, not only absence.
When a friend or chosen family member dies, you don't just lose them, you lose the shared history that lived between you. They were the keeper of certain memories. The one who remembered who you used to be. The one who understood the inside jokes, the turning points, the versions of you that no longer exist.
This loss can feel destabilizing. You may feel as though parts of your past are suddenly unmoored, with no one left who truly remembers them the way you do. Grief here is not only about absence; it is about continuity. About wondering who will witness your life now in the same way.
It can help to honor this history, by telling stories, writing memories, or creating rituals that keep the connection alive. Not to cling to the past, but to acknowledge that it mattered. You do not lose your shared story just because one of you is gone. It still lives in you.
With care,
