Loss by suicide
Grief in a World That Does Not Know How to Talk About It
The silence, the stigma, and finding your people.
Suicide is one of the few losses that still carries heavy stigma. People may not know what to say. They may say the wrong thing, something minimising, something blaming, something so awkward it leaves you breathless. Some people may disappear entirely, unable to face the magnitude of what has happened.
This silence can make grief feel even lonelier. You may find yourself editing your story, hiding the cause of death, or pretending you are coping better than you are. You may feel that no one understands, and in many cases, they do not, not because they do not care, but because they have not walked this particular road.
Finding others who have experienced suicide loss can be transformative. Support groups, online communities, or even a single friend who truly gets it can make the difference between isolation and connection. You do not have to educate everyone. You do not have to carry the stigma. You are allowed to seek out people who know this grief from the inside.
You are not required to make others comfortable with your loss.
You are allowed to say the word 'suicide' out loud.
And you are allowed to find your people, even if it takes time.
With care,
The Erin Foundation
