Loss by suicide

When Anger Lives Alongside Love

The rage, the betrayal, and the tenderness that remain.

It is possible to love someone fiercely and also be furious with them. Suicide grief often brings both emotions into the same room, sometimes at the same moment. You may feel abandoned. You may feel betrayed. You may feel that they took something from you, future moments, shared years, the life you imagined together.

This anger does not cancel out your love. It does not make you a bad person, a selfish griever, or someone who did not care enough. It makes you human. You are grieving a loss that was, in some sense, chosen, and that choice can feel like a wound inflicted as well as a wound received.

Some people also feel anger at the world, at a system that did not help, at a culture that stigmatises mental illness, at a god who allowed it. This too is part of the landscape. You do not need to tidy your emotions into acceptable shapes. Grief is not tidy.

You are allowed to be angry.

You are allowed to feel betrayed.

And you are still allowed to love them, completely, through all of it.

With care,
