Anticipatory grief

The In-Between Place

Living in the space between hope and loss.

There is a strange limbo that accompanies anticipatory grief. You are neither fully here nor fully there. You are caring for someone you are slowly losing. You are making memories while knowing they may be the last. You are laughing one moment and crying the next, sometimes without knowing which will come.

This in-between place can feel unbearably disorienting. The mind swings between planning and surrendering, between holding on and letting go. You may feel pressure to make every moment meaningful, to say everything, to leave nothing unsaid. But real life does not work that way. There will be ordinary moments too, meals, silence, frustration, exhaustion. And that is okay.

Anticipatory grief asks you to live in two timelines at once: the one where things are still okay, and the one where they will not be. This is not a failure of attention or resilience. It is the reality of loving someone while facing their mortality.

You do not have to force every moment into significance.

You are allowed to feel tired, angry, numb, or overwhelmed.

The in-between is painful, but it is still part of your love story.

With care,
