Loss of unborn child, miscarriage, or stillbirth
Grief and the 'What Ifs'
The future that disappeared in an instant.
One of the most painful aspects of losing an unborn child is the sudden disappearance of a future that was already vivid in your mind. You had imagined birthdays, first steps, names, voices, a lifetime of moments that now will never arrive.
The 'what ifs' can become a loop. What if I had done something differently? What if the timing had been different? What if the world had allowed this baby to stay? These questions are natural, but they can also become a place where grief gets stuck, replaying alternate realities that no longer exist.
It is important to know: the future you imagined was real to you, and its loss is real too. You are not grieving nothing. You are grieving a life, a relationship, a role, and a love that had already taken root. The 'what ifs' do not mean you are stuck in denial. They mean you are human, and the human mind searches for meaning when something precious is taken away.
You are allowed to mourn the future.
You are allowed to let go of the 'what ifs' slowly, on your own timeline.
You do not have to justify your grief by proving what might have been.
With care,
