Anticipatory grief
The Quiet Goodbye
Preparing for a loss that has already begun.
There is a particular sorrow in saying goodbye while someone is still alive. You may have already begun to grieve the routines, the conversations, the shared future. You may find yourself mourning the person they were, even as you care for the person they are becoming in illness or decline.
This quiet goodbye is often invisible to the outside world. Friends and family may see someone still present and assume you are not yet grieving. But you know better. You know that parts of your loved one have already left. You know that every day brings a small additional loss, of ability, of memory, of connection.
Preparing for death while someone is still living is one of the hardest emotional tasks a person can undertake. It requires you to hold love and loss in the same hand, to keep caring while also beginning to let go. There is no right way to do this. There is no script.
You are allowed to grieve what has already been lost.
You are allowed to love what remains.
And you are allowed to carry both, for as long as it takes.
With care,
The Erin Foundation
